I first met Joan at Pine Street in the 1980's. She was a nurse and I was an intern at BCH. I have a vivid memory of watching Joan peel the filthy socks off of a tired old man and wash and groom his feet. She spoke quietly to him as she washed his terrible feet and then she gave him clean socks and away he went, back to battle the streets and his life. I realized at the time that I had witnessed true grace and real healing. What a privilege to have known Joan.
